Man’s iPhone 6 Bends, Catches on Fire and Burns His Leg

Phillip Lechter found himself on the receiving end of a bizarre accident last week, as he claims that his iPhone 6 bent and then set on fire in his pocket, giving him a second-degree burn in the process.

Lechter’s injury was allegedly sustained in Arizona, after a rickshaw he and his family were riding in “caught a trolley track” and tipped over. While Lechter and his family were not ejected from the rickshaw, the force of the impact was enough to bend his iPhone 6 in his pocket, with Lechter claiming that it also somehow caught on fire.

Taking to his blog, Lechter wrote: “I immediately checked my wife and son to make sure they were ok. While I was looking at them, I felt a burning sensation on my leg and then saw and smelled smoke from my pants. I surveyed the rickshaw quickly and could not find anything that could have set me on fire. Then it hit me, my phone was in my pocket.

“Somehow in the process of the tipping of the rickshaw my new APPLE iPhone 6 had bent in my front pocket and caught on fire.”

He continued: “The smell was disturbing. I could feel my leg burning. I pulled the Apple iPhone 6 out of my pocket and threw it to the side.

“Someone from a crowd of spectators threw a cup of water on my leg to put the fire out on my jeans. I had a leather Apple case on the phone, and the case was facing forward, and that saved my fingers from getting badly burned when i went to remove the phone from my pocket.

“A bystander was not so lucky; he picked up the phone without the case and burned his fingers.”

Lechter uploaded a video that was allegedly recorded seconds after the incident took placd, which shows a cup of ice being thrown onto the iPhone 6 followed by a distinct sizzling sound. Watch it below:

Thus far “#bendgate” has only concerned the iPhone 6 Plus model, though the model shown in the video is the standard iPhone 6. Of course, iPhone 6 owners aren’t going to frequently be involved in a rickshaw crash, though if the iPhone 6 really did set alight upon breaking then this could cause a few more incidents of its ilk in the future.
