A poor dog in Ohio was covered in gasoline before being rescued by wardens at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter. The rescuers were worried that the pooch was in greater danger than normal due to rising temperatures in the area that were already in the 90s. Fortunately, the rescuers arrived in time to save the dog, now named Penelope, who will hopefully receive a clean bill of health as it recovers at the shelter.
The dog, Penelope, could be up for adoption soon
Deputy Warden Kayla Wenz recounted the call the agency received, as reported by Spectrum News 1 out of Cleveland on July 7.
“Somebody said on the voicemail that they saw a dog get doused in gasoline, and that the dog is currently now on their porch,” Wenz recounted. “And that day, it was in the 90s, upper 90s outside.”
The wardens arrived on the scene and realized the canine had multiple health issues, including a limp, matted fur around the arms and face, and eyes likely irritated by the gasoline she was covered in. But the dog, who was given the name Penelope, was still in high spirits when it met the rescuers.
“By the time we got out there, obviously, she was hot,” the warden reported. “She was just still sitting on the back porch, instantly just wiggled up to us because she is just so sweet.”
Another employee at the shelter, External Affairs Manager Jen Heuttich said the dog, who was washed clean, will be up for adoption once the vet gives clearance for it.
In addition to Penelope, the agency rescued eight kittens and their mother, who are in the care of one of the shelter’s supervisors until they are ready to be at at the rescue.
At the time of writing, it doesn’t look like Penelope is available for adoption yet. The Valley View shelter regularly posts dogs who are up for adoption on its official Facebook page.
