1800-STRAYA Is The Hotline To Help Fight Homesickness While Abroad

These days, you’d be pretty bloody lucky to be overseas and not find at least one Australian anywhere you go – easily identifiable by the abrasive, crow-like accent which cuts through the delicate, conversational-level languages like a boomerang.

Still, it’s hard to completely avoid feeling homesick during a freezing cold December night, which is why Travel Insurance Direct has announced 1800-STRAYA, the cure to even the most aggressive homesickness.

The hotline is already up and running, and you don’t even need to be overseas to make the most of it. A kind, gentle and most importantly familiar voice guides you through an plethora of pre-recorded sounds that fill the air on any given moment Down Under. Sounds that, for one reason or another, just don’t seem to be anywhere else. Like funnel web spiders, if you will.

At the press of a button, you can immerse yourself in the sounds of waves crashing at Bondi Beach, the roar of the crowd at the MCG, and your neighbour filling his wheelie bin with empties. If you wanted something a bit more down temp, you can reminisce on what it was like to be on hold with Centrelink for an eternity or perhaps the horrific silence of Sydney on a Saturday night. Ah the things that bring us together.

TID crunched the numbers on our recent travel habits, learning that there’s a fair few of us – 69% of all respondents – keen to, or currently embarking on a solo sojourn of self-discovery, eager to avoid the ‘Nah, I don’t want to go there’ and ‘I’ll be ready in 5 minutes’ type of travel buddy.

You can give it a whirl now on 1800-787-292 (1800-STRAYA) or head over to the website for previews of the beautiful homegrown sounds. Before you know it, you’ll be right back on that path of self discovery.
