eBay Scalpers Are Already Making Money Off the Apple Watch

Savvy assholes are already making money from the Apple Watch, after the upcoming wearable device was the subject of high demand leading to many shipping delays.

While the Apple Watch is still available to buy in many regions, those who didn’t pre-order it within its first few hours on sale will be forced to wait a few month following its launch date to get their hands on one. This is where eBay profiteering comes in, with many users on the auctioning site having purchased the devices in order to sell them for an increased price.

The devices are already littering the site, with all three versions of the Watch being available, including the high-end Apple Watch Edition. Each listing is inevitably selling the Watch for a higher price point than the wearable retails for in the Apple Store, with one seller in particular attempting to sell the 38mm rose gold, white sport band Apple Watch Edition for $15,000, despite it being sold by Apple for $10,000. Another listing is selling the 38mm black sport band Apple Watch Edition for $14,100, a $4,100 increase on its market value.

A listing for the Apple Watch Edition, which is selling the device for $5,000 more than its retail value.

Apple products are always a prime target for scalpers with the high level of demand seemingly never matching the supply, therefore leading to shipping delays that will lead many to pay more money just to get their hands on the tech at an earlier date. With those who pre-ordered the Watch a few hours following its appearance on the Apple Store being told that they should expect to receive it in July/August, prospective consumers are looking towards eBay in order to have their hands on the hardware closer to its April 24th release date.

The Apple Watch has proven to be a big hit since Apple began accepting pre-orders, with the wearable selling out completely within its first hour on sale in China. While scalping is an irritating and selfish practice, it’s certainly a profitable one, and I can imagine that many are now eyeing up their pre-orders and considering putting their Watch up for sale on the site in order to make some extra cash.
