If you thought your Mum finally getting Instagram was the most embarrassing thing that happened on social media this weekend, think again, as one SBS sports reporter has lost his job after tweeting a series of “highly inappropriate” comments about Anzac diggers.
Football journo Scott McIntyre cleverly decided that the 100th anniversary of our nation’s darkest day was prime time to voice his controversial opinion on the Anzac mythology calling it, “the cultification of an imperialist invasion of a foreign nation that Australia had no quarrel with is against all ideals of modern society.”
“Wonder if the poorly-read, largely white, nationalist drinkers and gamblers pause today to consider the horror that all mankind suffered, ” he continued. “Remembering the summary execution, widespread rape and theft committed by these ‘brave’ Anzacs in Egypt, Palestine and Japan.”
SBS managing director Eddie Abeid was quick to respond to the widespread outcry and disgust at McIntyre’s tweet, distancing the broadcaster from the comments and announcing that McIntyre was sacked effective immediately. “It’s not tenable to remain on air if your audience doesn’t respect or trust you,” he said.
Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull also criticised McIntrye’s comments, tweeting in response “Difficult to think of more offensive or inappropriate comments than those by @mcintinhos. Despicable remarks which deserve to be condemned.”
McIntyre has yet to comment on being punted, and has not deleted any of his tweets, even continue to favourite tweets of support. Check out the full set of tweets below.
