Bulls***: “People Aren’t Getting Married Because of Porn,” Study Claims

Researchers have claimed that free pornography has led to people becoming disinterested in marriage.

A study carried out at the German Institute for the Study of Labor suggested that the rise of internet porn had a causal effect on people choosing not to get married. The study notes: “Traditionally, one of the reasons to enter into a marriage was sexual gratification. But as options for sexual gratification outside of marriage have grown, the need for a marriage to serve this function is diminishing.”

The researchers found that a big decline in the number of people getting married directly coincided with the rise of the availability of porn, with cheaper pornography allegedly making it “easier to stay single.”

“If a man can choose whether to get married at the beginning of the period, higher utility from marriage is required in order for the man to marry,” the researchers noted. “Thus, cheaper pornography is unequivocally associated with lower marriage rates.”

Founded in 1998, the institute brands itself as a “place of communication between academic science and political practice,” but it’s more than little difficult to believe that porn would have a direct impact on marriage. In truth, it’s much more likely that the world is simply shifting from the traditional view of how relationships should progress as years go by. With less pressure to get married in this day and age, it’s inevitable that there will be less people who get married. Of course, in some cases individuals may replace human relationships with porn, though to directly link the dwindling popularity of the act of marriage with porn is more than a little contrived.
