Idris Elba Will Return To ‘Luther’ In 2015

Yesterday, Fox revealed that an American adaptation of “Luther” is getting a put-pilot commitment with series creator Neil Cross and Idris Elba on board as executive producers. However, Elba wasn’t expected to reprise his role and the potential Fox TV series seemed to dash any hopes of a follow up to the three seasons of “Luther” on BBC.

Today, BBC made the surprise announcement that Elba will return to “Luther” one last time in a two part miniseries slated to begin production early next year. Elba’s character, John Luther was a brilliant but self-destructive police detective who found himself drawn to a psychopath named Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).

“Luther” Season 3 ended with John Luther and Alice on the verge of an emotional relationship despite the previous animosity between them. The “Luther” miniseries will presumably follow up on that thread, but it’s currently unknown if Wilson will reprise her role.

In a statement, Cross said “Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work.”

Cross is also writing the American adaptation of “Luther,” which will be in contention for a slot on Fox’s 2015 TV schedule.
