Paul Chapman Agrees To New Deal With Dons

Paul Chapman has agreed to play a 16th AFL season after signing a new one-year deal with the Essendon Bombers on Tuesday.

The three-time Geelong premiership player was reportedly stuck in a contract impasse with his new club, but opted to return for a second season with the Dons, potentially leaving money on the table to get the deal done.

“I’m really excited to be playing on for another year with the Bombers,” Chapman said.

“After playing 20 games this year, my body and mind still feel really good. I felt I had a really productive first year at the club and hopefully the coaches felt that I played the role they needed me to.

“I’m looking forward to going around again with the boys and getting stuck in to the pre-season.”

Chapman’s debut season with the Dons saw the 33-year-old average 19.9 disposals and a goal per game in 20 outings, also finishing ninth in the club’s best and fairest.

Coach James Hird is thrilled to have the 271-game veteran’s stable influence return for another season.

“Being a triple premiership player, there is no doubt that Paul brings invaluable experience to our team,” Hird said.

“He played some really solid football this year, particularly towards the end of the season and really showed his class during the club’s finals series.

“Paul is a great role model and provides important guidance for our relatively young forward line. He is a terrific asset for our club.”

Chapman was delisted by Geelong in early October last year after 14 seasons with the Cats when the club refused to guarantee the veteran more than eight games in 2014.

“Playing VFL footy is not how I want to end it either. I’m just looking forward and hopefully I can keep playing footy,” Chapman told the crowd at last year’s Geelong B&F function following 251 games 336 goals for the club.
