Link, Villager, and Four New Cups Are Coming to Mario Kart 8 as Soon as This November

Yes, you read that right. Nintendo has revealed via its UK Store that Mario Kart 8 will be getting multiple firsts for the series, in the form of two upcoming DLC packs. Each pack includes new characters, skins, and courses, all things that have never been added to a Mario Kart title post-release. These packs are separate from tomorrow’s Mercedes DLC, which is free.

In terms of what you’ll actually get with each pack, the breakdown is pretty simple. The first pack will unlock Link as a playable character, a cat-suit skin for Peach, and a tanooki skin for Mario. These will technically all be listed in-game as additional characters, and like the metal versions of Mario and Peach, it’s possible that weight and handling will differ. We’ll have to wait until they’re available to find out.

The second pack offers a similar amount of content, and more truly “new” characters. Among them are Animal Crossing’s Villager, Isabelle from the 3DS’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and a character called Dry Bowser, seen in Super Mario 3D Land and other Mario titles. The first DLC pack will release this November, while the latter will arrive in May of 2015. Both are slated to cost £7, and will include four new tracks each.

Here’s Nintendo’s official description of what players are getting.

Each Add On Content pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of available courses by 50 percent. The Add On Content packs include classics like Wario’s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first AOC pack.

DLC buyers will also get eight new colors for both Yoshi and Shyguy, which will be available immediately if you preorder. I’m not sure I care all that much about Yoshi colors, but two new cups? For Mario Kart 8 online enthusiasts, that is fantastic news.
