David Zayas Is Sal Maroni on ‘Gotham’

Last year, David Zayas wrapped up his eight season run on “Dexter.” But this fall, he’ll be back on TV on the other side of the law.

Deadline is reporting that Zayas has been signed to a recurring role on “Gotham” as Sal Maroni, a mob boss from Batman’s earliest days as a hero. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1942, Maroni was also the man responsible for disfiguring Harvey Dent in the comics, which led to his metamorphosis into the villain known as Two-Face. In The Dark Knight, Maroni was played by Eric Roberts.

For the Batman prequel series, “Gotham,” Maroni is “second only to Carmine Falcone (John Doman) in power and reach, and second to none in his appetite for violence… As he strives to gain more territory in Gotham, he’ll find himself on a crash course with his rival Falcone for control of the city.

Zayas is a former New York police officer who made the leap to acting following his six years in law enforcement. Prior to “Dexter,” Zayas’ best known role was in “Oz” as Enrique Morales. Zayas has made numerous appearances in “Law & Order” in addition to his turns in 16 Blocks, The Expendables, Skyline and The Savages.

More recently, Zayas recurred on FX’s sitcom, “Saint George” and made guest appearances in “Person of Interest” and “The Following.”

“Gotham” will premiere on Monday, September 22 on Fox.
