Bungie: Destiny Alpha Offered Key Info Ahead of September Release

There’s no bigger game landing in the back half of 2014 than Bungie’s sci-fi epic Destiny — and apparently, the playable alpha available last weekend during E3 week was pretty critical for Bungie.

Yes, they needed to let players run around and kick the tires on the giant open world environment before its scheduled Sept. 9 release.  But according to Bungie personnel, the game is just so damn sprawling that they need you to tell them what the hell it is they’ve built.

As Bungie senior environmental artist Jason Sussman told PlayStation Blog (in a story re-reported by Crave gaming site Destructoid),…

“We need to think about how we can explain this game to players because it’s really big — how do we do it? Well, by getting the alpha out there, we get to show people the game early as well as testing all of our systems so that when the game is finally out there, we’re putting our best foot forward.”

And now that the data from the alpha is in the process of being appropriately crunched, Sussman said July’s planned beta will take advantage of that new information players gave them.

“The beta test later in the year will contain different content — there will be a difference but what’s key is that every bit of information we’re gathering and the tweaks and adjustments we’re making will carry through to the Beta test.”

Well, even though Aisha Tyler isn’t psyched for Destiny, we’re sufficiently intrigued at what Bungie has to offer…we’ll see if the beta offers up as much promise as the alpha.
