Xavier Dolan Wins Major Praise At Cannes For Mommy

The 25-year-old Montreal director Xavier Dolan is returning home from the Cannes Film Festival with a huge smile plastered on his face after his latest project, “Mommy,” won major praise.

You have no idea,” she actress Anne Dorval at a post-Cannes news conference Monday morning at Montreal’s Excentris cinema (to The Gazette). “People were screaming his name, screaming like it was Mick Jagger. Guys were shouting, ‘Can I touch you? You promised.’ He didn’t promise anything. He was like, ‘I don’t know you.’ It made no sense. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve never been so close to a rock star. It was incredible. At the same time, it doesn’t surprise me. I have so much admiration for him. I’m happy the world now recognizes him, salutes him, and loves him to that extent. That’s all he wants. It’s why he writes and makes films.”

Dolan told CTV News, “Being there in that theatre, filled with history, (a) theatre that has been populated by greatest figures and heroes of cinema is very moving in itself… And then when people are acclaiming your film and everyone is crying and you are surrounded by the people you love the most, well, what can I say. It is the greatest moment ever.”
