Nico Rosberg, Mercedes Take Out Monaco GP

Another strong showing from Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix has resulted in teammates Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton finishing first and second respectively ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo in Monte Carlo.

The German Rosberg claimed his second Grand Prix of the Formula 1 season, and second straight in Monaco, to extend Mercedes’ unbeaten streak after six stages, also overtaking his English teammate at the top of the driver standings.

“The pressure was on all the way but I kept it cool and was able to win,” said Rosberg, who set out from pole position and was forced to spend the early stages keeping Hamilton off his back until the Brit fell behind complaining of vision problems, reportedly hampered by dirt in his eyes. The German eventually got home with a 9.2-second advantage while Hamilton was left with the task of keeping Red Bull rookie Daniel Ricciardo at bay.

Ricciardo wasn’t able to collect what would have been a career best second place finish as Hamilton scraped ahead of the Australian in a nose-to-tail finish.

Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel saw his horror 2014 continue when the reigning champion was forced to retire after eight laps due to a power unit failure in his 100th race for the team.

Rosberg now leads the driver standings 122-118 over Hamilton while the third placed Fernando Alonso holds a seven-point lead over Ricciardo.
