NYIAS 2014: Mazda MX-5 Miata Set to Celebrate 25 Years

The Mazda MX-5 Miata will arrive in NYC with historic vehicles. As Mazda itself puts it, the New York International Auto Show will see MX-5 auto show concepts, race cars and production models. Details on the big birthday party will continue coming in during the three week lead up to NYIAS 2014.

The little two-seater arrived in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, immediately making an impression much larger than its classic, smooth-edged roadster frame. It was unlike anything built at the time and still carries a defiant atmosphere of irresponsible fun other cars can’t manage anymore. While detractors said the first MX-5 off the line was silly or an overgrown Fisher Price mobile, the car endured and underwent significant evolutions over the years.

The current version is less snub-nosed than the original, while maintaining that zip and nimble handling a true roadster must possess.

According to Mazda, they’ve sold more than 900,000 Miatas during the car’s three distinct designs/redesigns. Versions of the car, both new and classic, will be polished and ready for the public with NYIAS 2014 opens on April 18.
