SXSW 2014 VIDEO: J.A. Bayona on Penny Dreadful

J.A. Bayona was at SXSW 2014, and we offered him a penny for his dreadful thoughts. The director of Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” was here to discuss his ambitious new TV series which unites classic horror characters in an all-new gothic story. We had already talked to “Penny Dreadful” star Josh Hartnett, now we’re find out more about the decisions made in the storytelling and filmmaking process of the upcoming series.

In this exclusive video interview, director J.A. Bayona explains why the gothic horror characters of “Penny Dreadful” are all dealing directly with repression, going back to the source material for Frankenstein and Dracula, recapturing the emotions of the classic characters, establishing the visual style of “Penny Dreadful,” taking influence from paintings instead of motion pictures, the possibility of future cameos, and whether the classic horror novels that inspired “Penny Dreadful” were, in fact, technically penny dreadfuls.
