Neil Gaiman: A Black Actor Turned Down Doctor Who

Peter Capaldi is a great choice to play The Doctor. But was he the BBC’s first choice for Doctor Who

Neil Gaiman, who has written some fantastic episodes of Doctor Who including The Doctor’s Wife, said in an interview, posted to Crave’s /Film website, a black actor turned down the opportunity to become the 12th Doctor.

As Doctor Who is growing in worldwide popularity, it’s not surprising the BBC would try to find an actor of color or a woman for the 12th regeneration of Britain’s most long-lived science fiction icon.

If what Gaiman says is true, it must be slightly disappointing form many Whovians … which is in no way a commentary on Capaldi’s casting. The man is going to be a great Doctor.

Perhaps the 13th Doctor will offer something different in addition to the likely change of tone that comes with every new casting for Doctor Who.
