‘Last Resort’ Creators Reteam For ‘Freedom’ At ABC

During the Fall 2012 TV season, ABC’s “Last Resort” was one of the best dramas on television despite its inability to grab a sizable audience. Consequently, the series was canceled after 13 episodes.

However, “Last Resort” creators Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek are coming back to ABC. Deadline is reporting that Ryan and Gajdusek have signed a deal with ABC for “Freedom,” a new drama that follows “a group of brilliant, eclectic, freethinking Ivy League students who help create the next resistance movement to government and corporate power.”

“Freedom” is said to have been inspired by the hacker collective Anonymous and Wikileaks. The deal with ABC for “Freedom” also carries “a sizable penalty,” which makes a pilot order very likely.

Since the end of “Last Resort,” Ryan signed on to produce the miniseries “Mad Dogs” at FX and a new mining town drama at HBO. Ryan also wrote and executive produced the “Beverly Hills Cop” pilot that CBS turned down. Gajdusek is also working with HBO on “The Spark,” one of the first true sci-fi projects at the premium network.

If “Freedom” goes to pilot, it will likely be in contention for the Fall 2014 TV season.
