The CW’s President on ‘Supernatural’ Spinoff, ‘The Flash’ & ‘Nikita’ Finale

Mark Pedowitz, President of the CW, had his executive session with the Television Critics Association today and addressed a number of developments for his networks genre series. First, on the news of a potential “Supernatural” spinoff that would have a backdoor pilot this season, Pedowitz made sure to indicate development was still early, but he had some further hints.

“I’m sure Jeremy Carver and Eric Kripke will be happy to talk about it,” said Pedowitz. “Right now it’s in the beginning of development. It’s in Chicago, there will be hunters, there will be monsters, but it plans to be planted [through ‘Supernatural’].”

Pedowitz also confirmed that the spinoff will be intended to feature all new characters, not currently part of the “Supernatural” cast. And good news for “Supernatural” fans, Pedowitz said the current season nine arc has every potential of continuing to a 10th season.

“I would love ‘Supernatural’ to continue as long as they can continue,” added Pedowitz. “From what I’ve read so far of Jeremy Carver’s plans, he’s creating arcs that could go longer. As long as the fan base is there and the ratings are there, there’s no reason this couldn’t continue.”

Talking about the hit “Arrow,” Pedowitz announced plans to bring The Flash into the DC Comics series. “We plan to introduce a recurring character and an origin story of Barry Allen who you know as The Flash. We’ll see how it goes and hopefully it’ll go well. We do want to expand upon the DC universe. We think they are rich character we can use and felt this is an organic way to get there.”

With a Flash movie rumored to be on the slate for DC and Warner Brothers, Pedowitz said there’s no conflict with DC theatrical, so “Arrow” is okay to use The Flash. “I’ve spoken to [DC Entertainment president] Diane Nelson as well as [WB President and CEO] Peter Roth. Greg [Berlanti] has spoken to them. We’re good to go.”

The CW was planning a Wonder Woman pilot called “Amazon” last year. Now the focus is on the “Arrow” universe. According to Pedowitz, “‘Amazon’ is on pause right now. The script isn’t quite where we want it. It’s an iconic DC character and we’re not going to put it on unless it works. The origin of Black Canary is coming on and potential origin of The Flash. It’s better to wait and get it right.”

For the last six episodes of “Nikita,” Pedowitz suggested his plan for giving the series “a proper sendoff.” It won’t be three two hour airings as has been reported. ”The game plan for Nikita is not really ‘two hour movies.”’It is individual episodes. We may end up doing a two hour finale after the first four singularly. We’re aiming for November.”

For fans of the short lived CW series “Cult,” Pedowitz could offer no closure on the mysterious character of show-within-a-show producer Steven Rea. “Well, we never got to that second season, did we? Again, we tried to give it the conclusion we could. Unfortunately ‘Cult’ was a swing. It missed. It was planned by Rockne [S O’Bannon] to talk about who Steven Rea was in the second season. Just didn’t happen.”
