E3 2013: Ubisoft Surprises with a New IP: The Division

We all hoped Ubisoft would surprise us with a new title … maybe even a new IP.  And at their E3 event Monday, the French game company did just that, introducing The Division. (Yeah, Tom Clancy is about to make more money.)

The Division asks the question what the government would do to ensure the survival of what’s left of America after society crashes. Massive bases The Division on this question and puts you in the role of a government agent after the fall who is trying to make sure America does not end.

Massive showed off some co-op gameplay of their high-concept RPG, including skill trees, drop-in, drop-out co-op and even PvP team battles.

The gameplay looks amazing. The open-world design looks appropriately bleak without being monochromatic and boring. The skills and actions look almost overwhelmingly deep and the tease that you can compete against other squads is tantalizing.

The possible downside is that this IP might be so rich and detailed that it might turn-off casuals who just want a simple game to play. We don’t know much more than you see in the video, but this is absolutely a title we will keep our eyes on as information is released.
