Mads Mikkelsen in Talks for Thor 2 Villain

With The Avengers still breaking box office records and Iron Man 3 almost fully cast, it now falls to Thor 2 to capture the imaginations of dreamcasters everywhere. The sequel to the 2011 fantasy blockbuster, which proved to be a direct prequel to this summer’s Marvel team-up, is slated to be directed by “Game of Thrones” helmer Alan Taylor, and reunite Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston in the lead roles of Thor, Jane Foster and Loki, respectively. But who are the new bad guys? Well, one of them might be played by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, best known to American audiences as the villainous Le Chiffre in 2006’s Casino Royale.

Variety reports that Mikkelsen is in talks for an unspecified villain role in the superhero sequel, but Thor doesn’t have the most expansive rogues gallery in comics, and the Asgardian sorceress The Enchantress and her warrior flunky Skurge, aka The Executioner, have long been rumored to be the villains the second time out. That said, well, he could theoretically be anyone. He’d make an fine Thanos, although we’d be surprised if Marvel whipped him out so far in advance of The Avengers 2. Then again he’d also work well in the role of The Absorbing Man or Mephisto, the Marvel Universe equivalent of the devil himself.

Mads Mikkelsen has been a working actor since 1996’s crime thriller Pusher, directed by Drive‘s Nicolas Winding Refn, before eventually breaking into Hollywood blockbusters with 2004’s King Arthur. Since then he’s been balancing independent productions like Refn’s thematically appropriate Valhalla Rising and larger productions like the Clash of the Titans remake and 2011’s The Three Musketeers.

CraveOnline will be back with more Thor 2 news. You know, if we be worthy.
