I find myself on a packed escalator almost everyday, and I can say that the video below is my absolute nightmare. And I believe that it is a nightmare of many folks, too.
The victim, named as Mehmet Ali Erik, can be seen hopping on the escalator during rush hour at the Ayazaga Metro station in Istanbul, Turkey. While all is fine and dandy, that doesn’t remain the case for long as a hole opens up under his feet and literally swallows him hole.

Well that’s terrifying. According to Metro, Mehmet was under the escalator for an hour until he was finally rescued by firefighters. Mehmet was taken to the hospital with minor injures and he’s going to be fine.

But here’s a twist: people still decided to use the escalator even after the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality put up a warning sign near the broken escalator before the accident occurred. So in a way, Mehmet and the others are to blame for this, right? Then again, who wants to use a staircase when you can use something that takes you up and down and you don’t even have to break a sweat?
