Pacific Rim 2 is Still Coming, Has a New Screenwriter

Guillermo Del Toro’s giant robot vs. giant monster epic Pacific Rim was one of the most heavily anticipated movies of 2013, but it barely cracked $100 million at the domestic box office, leaving the future of the franchise very uncertain. But audiences who actually saw the film rallied behind it, international box office numbers were solid, and now a sequel is currently being written… by someone other than Travis Beacham, who created the franchise in the first place.

In a new interview with Buzzfeed, Guillermo Del Toro has “working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” the screenwriter of X2: X-Men United and Elektra, and that they have been collaborating for months. “We’ve found a way to twist it around,” Del Toro said. Travis Beacham has contributed to the sequel’s storyline but is too busy developing the new Fox TV series “Hieroglyph” to officially co-write the project.

The story for the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel is currently under wraps, of course, but co-star Charlie Day (“Newt”) dropped several hints last year, telling CraveOnline that Del Toro “liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film,” although he was quick to add that Del Toro may have moved on from the concept. Considering that Newt connected his mind to the interdimensional menace in the first film, however, the plot development still seems likely.

Screenwriter Travis Beacham also told CraveOnline that “there’s definitely a chance” that Newt would pilot his own Jaeger in the follow-up as well.
