Game of Thrones Nears Two Season Renewal From HBO

At the Television Critics Association press tour, HBO revealed that negotiations are underway to give Game of Thrones an early renewal.

According to Deadline, Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss are in talks with HBO for a likely 20 episode order that would be spread across seasons 7 and 8. Game of Thrones was previously given a two season renewal for its fifth and upcoming sixth season.

There’s no suspense about whether Game of Thrones will be renewed. The real question is how long the series will run. Benioff and Weiss had previously indicated that the series would wrap after seven seasons, but HBO has openly acknowledged that Benioff and Weiss are now planning eight seasons.

Last summer, HBO’s President Michael Lombardo said “David and Dan are feeling there’s probably two more years after Season 6, that’s what we’re looking at right now. We hope that they would change their mind, but that’s how they are feeling now.”

HBO also announced that Game of Thrones Season 6 will premiere on Sunday, April 24. This will be the first season of the series to take place beyond the previously released novels by George R.R. Martin.
