Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil Takes on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

There’s a superhero showdown coming this March, and it’s not the one that anyone was expecting!

According to a report on ComicBook.com, Marvel and Netflix have set Friday, March 25 as the release date for Daredevil Season 2. That’s one month earlier than Daredevil’s first season premiere, and it will send Marvel’s Man Without Fear directly against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

This kind of gamesmanship played out several months ago when Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. both claimed May 6, 2016 as the release date for Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, respectively. That could have been an unforgettable box office battle, but Warner Bros. elected to move up the release of its film. That won’t happen this time.

This scheduling move is clearly a shot across Warner Bros.’ bow, but will it adversely affect Batman v Superman at the box office? Some industry observers have suggested that Netflix’s 65 million subscribers may be enticed to binge watch Daredevil’s second season instead of rushing out to see Batman v Superman on its opening weekend. Most comic book fans will probably do both, and ultimately, this may not have a huge impact on Batman v Superman. But the aggressive nature of the move is somewhat surprising.

Daredevil Season 2 actually shares some thematic elements with Batman v. Superman. It’s set around the conflict between Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), with Elektra (Élodie Yung) as the wildcard. But among casual fans, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are more well known characters. This release date battle may be more about perception than anything else.
