Fox Lands a Rambo TV Series

It seems that Sylvester Stallone can never quite get away from his signature franchises. Creed is basically the seventh Rocky movie, and it may be the first time since the original Rocky movie that Stallone could have a legitimate shot at some Oscar gold. Stallone’s other iconic character may also have found new life on the small screen.

Deadline is reporting that Fox has signed a deal to potentially bring Rambo back to life as a TV series. There are conflicting accounts as to whether Stallone will appear in the Rambo: New Blood television show as John Rambo, the character he originated in First Blood back in 1982. But the focus of the series will be on Rambo’s never-before revealed son.

Rambo: New Blood is said to explore “the complex relationship between Rambo and his son, J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL.” Of course, Rambo had no son in the four Rambo movies, but that’s the nature of the Hollywood beast. It’s also a way to use Rambo’s lineage if Stallone decides not to reprise his role. The closest comparison is the failed Beverly Hills Cop pilot at CBS that would have featured Eddie Murphy in a recurring role as Axel Foley while focusing on his son’s adventures.

Screenwriter Jeb Stuart (The Fugitive) is writing the Rambo TV series, which will be produced by Entertainment One and Millennium Films. The proposed fifth Rambo movie, Rambo: Last Blood was already on hold when the Rambo television project materialized. Stallone and Millennium Film’s Avi Lerner are also producing a TV incarnation of The Expendables at Fox.

Believe it or not, this won’t be the first Rambo TV series. In 1986, the animated Rambo: The Forces of Freedom was created to help sell a Rambo action figure line of toys.
