AMC Renews The Walking Dead for Season 7

AMC made a new for itself in the world of original programing with Mad Men and Breaking Bad. But it wasn’t until 2010 that the network had a breakout hit on its hands with the adaptation of Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard’s comic book series, The Walking Dead. Now, the zombies rule Sunday nights, and The Walking Dead is one of the most popular shows on television.

In news that will surprise absolutely no one, AMC has renewed The Walking Dead for a seventh season of 16 episodes to premiere in Fall 2016. This is on top of the spinoff/companion series, Fear The Walking Dead which was already ordered for a second season of 15 episodes for next year. That gives AMC at least 31 Sundays of Walking Dead content in 2016, and it does carry the risk of oversaturation of its most popular brand.

As part of the announcement, AMC confirmed that the post-Walking Dead talk show, Talking Dead has also been renewed.

“We are so proud to share these shows with fans who have been so passionate, communicative and engaged,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “We are grateful for and continually impressed by the talent, effort and excellence on continuous display by Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, Chris Hardwick and the many people with whom we partner to make these unique shows possible. The result: More Walking and Talking. Hooray.”

AMC’s fortunes are so closely tied to The Walking Dead that the company’s stock actually dropped when The Walking Dead’s ratings were slightly lower at the beginning of its current season.

At this point, there is no telling how long The Walking Dead TV series can run. The comic book series still has years of material to adapt, but the network would probably have to dole out some serious cash to keep the cast once their current deals expire. Alternatively, any cast hold outs could become zombie food, as the TV series has already veered away from the source material when necessary.
