Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s On the Wall’ is On Track to Become the First Number One Bond Theme

Sam Smith looks set to break a record in the UK, with his theme for the upcoming movie Spectre ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ being on course to become the first ever Bond theme to reach number one in the region’s music charts.

Despite the song being met with a lukewarm reception on social media after it was released, it is nonetheless proving to be a success in terms of sales, with it currently having sold double the amount of Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean?’ which sits in second place.

Smith had previously told BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw that he didn’t believe the track would top the charts due to it not being a “number one friendly track”, but it seems almost certain that will be the case. Regardless of the quality of the single, this will prove to be a landmark moment for the Bond film series, as despite it spawning a number of iconic themes none of them have managed to secure a number one in the UK.

This will also be big news for Sam Smith, who is the first solo male British act to take on the task of recording a Bond theme since Tom Jones’ ‘Thunderball’ in 1965.

Meanwhile, in the album charts, Disclosure are on track to earn their second UK number one LP with Caracal, with New Order sitting behind them with their first new album in a decade, Music Complete.
