Rick Mercer And Sarah Polley Inducted Into Order Of Canada

Wednesday morning Gov. Gen. David Johnston presented a new lot of Canadians with the distinguished Order of Canada, including CBC’s Rick Mercer (The Rick Mercer Report), Sarah Polley, singer Chantal Kreviazuk, CFLer Wally Buono (former GM for the BC Lions), and chef Normand Laprise.

Other recipients included:

  • Tim Cook, historian
  • Peter Milliken, retired MP and longest-serving Speaker of the House of Commons
  • Alex Pauk, composer
  • Gary Slaight, broadcasting executive
  • Eric Walters, children’s book author

Lions president Dennis Skulsky said the organization is proud of their executive. “It is a great day,”he said of the investiture ceremony. “He has a big heart,” Skulsky said to The Province. “He stops all the time for pictures and autographs. He is constantly trying to find ways to help people. This is a nice, fitting tribute to him. It is people like him who contribute and make a difference.”

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
