Gillian Anderson Hints At Long Standing Mystery In The X-Files Revival

During the original run of The X-Files, Gillian Anderson became pregnant and she had to be written out of the series for a few episodes. That was the beginning of the abduction storyline for her character, Dana Scully, and it later played into Scully’s cancer and the extreme difficulty that Scully had conceiving a child late in the series.

It’s long been assumed that aliens were behind Scully’s abduction. But at this weekend’s Fan Expo Canada, Anderson seemed to indicate that the story will be revisited in Fox’s upcoming six-episode revival of The X-Files.

“Could she have been abducted by the government?,” asked Anderson after a fan asked her who she thought was behind Scully’s abduction. “That’s all I’m going to say… We might find out in Season 10. Might. A little bit.”

Comic Book Resources’ Spinoff Blog has the full report from Anderson’s spotlight panel. She also shared her reaction to series creator Chris Carter’s plan to revisit The X-Files in a reduced format.

“They came to me and said they were thinking about [bringing X-Files back], and I thought, ‘This is a bad idea,’” joked Anderson. “It is not [one continuous story]. It is exactly what you used to get, so there’s a couple of comedic episodes, a couple ‘monster-of-the-week’ episodes, and a couple mythological ones.”

“When I watched the first episode, my reaction was, ‘Man, is this enough?’” added Anderson. “And then the expert in all things, Simon Pegg, said to me, ‘What they want is exactly what they got to begin with. It’s like comfort food. They want what you originally gave them and that will be enough.’ And that’s what you’re going to get. Hopefully, you guys will be happy, because that’s what it’s all about.”

The X-Files returns to Fox for the first of six episodes on Sunday, January 24 after the NFC Championship game.
