Marvel Closes In on Alfre Woodard For The Luke Cage Netflix Series

Veteran actress Alfre Woodard may Vincent D’Onofrio and David Tennant as the next major villain to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe original series on Netflix.

Deadline is reporting that Woodard is close to finishing a deal to star on Luke Cage, the third Marvel live-action original show on Netflix. Woodard is reportedly playing Minetta, “a powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life.” However, Deadline also speculates that Woodard’s character is an updated version of Black Mariah, one of Luke Cage and Iron Fist’s recurring enemies during the ‘70s.

Woodward’s genre credits include Star Trek: First Contact, True Blood, and the Black Panther animated series. More recently, she starred in State of Affairs, 12 Years a Slave, and guest starred on TNT’s The Last Ship.

Mike Colter is set to portray Luke Cage in Marvel’s Jessica Jones, before going on to star in his own series on Netflix next year. Still to be cast is Iron Fist a.k.a. Danny Rand, Luke Cage’s best in the comic book universe. But an Iron Fist probably won’t be chosen until Marvel and Netflix hire a showrunner for the project.
