Comic-Con 2015: Duncan Jones & Richard Taylor Craft the World of ‘Warcraft’

Ask a World of Warcraft player and they’ll tell you the world is biased. But whether it’s biased against the Alliance or biased against the Horde is a matter of ongoing debate. Don’t worry, fans: in the new Warcraft movie, director and co-writer Duncan Jones (Moon) is striving to give both sides equal time, to present a more nuanced depiction of war… even in a fantasy setting.

Crave caught up with Duncan Jones at Comic-Con 2015, where he had just unveiled a giant statue of Orgrim, one of the main characters of the Warcraft movie. Along with a few other outlets, we literally cornered the filmmaker and learned more about his plans for the long-awaited movie, got Duncan Jones to talk about the “Brad Pitt” of Orcs, and made him assure us that there will be absolutely no grinding whatsoever in the film.

And in a Crave exclusive video segment, Richard Taylor – the Oscar-winning co-founder of WETA Workshop – tells us all about the creation of the actual “world” of Warcraft, the creation of new beasts and Orcs that don’t look like anything WETA has done before (including Orcs). In this video, Taylor talks about the unique challenges of realizing worlds that have been extensively influenced by previous fantasy creations, including some of his own, and the underlying principles of design in Warcraft.
