SXSW 2015 Video: Brian Wilson, John Cusack & Bill Pohlad on ‘Love & Mercy’
Love & Mercy is the life story of singer/songwriter Brian Wilson, but not his entire life. Focusing mainly on two periods, Love and Mercy shows Brian Wilson past (Paul Dano) working on the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds, while Brian Wilson future (John Cusack) fall in love with Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks) but suffer under a domineering psychiatrist (Paul Giamatti)’s care.
Wilson himself, Cusack and director Bill Pohlad were in Austin for the film’s SXSW premiere, and we got to sit down with the trio to discuss the film and Wilson’s life. I was particularly interested in Wilson’s thoughts on harmony, as that’s the focus of his Pet Sounds and future musical work. The film also dramatized Wilson’s sensitivity to sound making simple dinner table noises painful to him, so we found out how Wilson deals with that now. Cusack discussed capturing Wilson’s voice, and I had to ask Pohlad about the Beach Boys “Full House” appearance I remembered as a kid. After SXSW, Love & Mercy will be in theaters June 5.
