FFVII’s “One Winged Angel” in Major Key Sounds like Cheerful Christmas Music

When it comes to gaming there are few songs as well-known as Final Fantasy VII‘s “One Winged Angel”. It’s a dark and ominous song written by composer Nobuo Uematsu that, in some ways, is one of several elements that have given the game a long-lasting impression. This piece comprised of powerful symphonic beats and choir-sung latin lyrics referring to Sephiroth and his manic ways is considered one of the best boss battle songs in history, played only during the game’s final encounter.

But what happens when you flip the key of a legendary piece like “One Winged Angel” from minor to major? Well, YouTube user tspeiro not only wanted to know the answer, but decided to venture out and find the answer.

Seen above, tspeiro’s remix of the work is played in C major. The result is an almost festive piece that makes Sephiroth not seem like such a bad guy after all. Check it out and put a smile on your face.

Did you know that Uematsu’s design of “One Winged Angel” fused the styles of composer Igor Stravinsky and superstar Jimi Hendrix? While speaking to G4 during an interview he shared that the two musicians are the first that came to mind while writing it, and that it was an experimental piece that was particularly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho theme and Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”.

Below are its lyrics translated from Latin to English:

Won’t remain, remain in memory
Won’t remain, remain in memory
Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Raging anger, anger and misery
Raging anger, anger and misery
Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Fierce, terrible fate

Won’t remain, remain in memory
Won’t remain, remain in memory
Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Come, my son. Come, my son
Come here, give me death once more
Come, my son. Come, my son
Come here, give me…

Won’t remain in memory
Raging anger and misery
Fierce, terrible fate
The second advent

My son, come, come, come, my son
My son, come, come, come, my son
My son, come, come, come, my son
My son, come, come, come, my son

My son, come, come, come, my son
(By death’s invitation)
My son, come, come, come, my son
(Painful tainted birth)
My son, come, come, come, my son
(Won’t call the name)
My son, come, come, come, my son
(The second advent)

Sephiroth, Sephiroth
Sephiroth

The piece certainly belongs in minor key.
