Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Will Be A Darker Game Than Its Predecessors

If you’re an Uncharted fan, you may be wondering what Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is doing to mix things up. We already know that it’ll have more expansive environments that serve as playgrounds for gameplay, but there’s more than that.

Uncharted 4 has taken some inspiration from Naughty Dog’s latest hit: The Last of Us. It’s a darker game, and one that will similarly take advantage of improved shader and lighting effects. Or, at least that’s what Naughty Dog is saying.

Speaking with HobbyConsolas,Lead Designer Ricky Cambier shared:

Yes, there will be a variety of scenarios exploiting the flashlight, always in relation the story. For example in the demo, while looking for his brother Nathan must enter a cave. Some of the mysteries of the island will be observed while exploring its darkness.

So how will the PS4 provide the foundation for this development goal? Designer Kurt Margenau answered:

Yes, the flashlight allows us to design darker areas and take advantage of the animations allowed by the new hardware.

Uncharted has had its fair share of caves, including Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’s Chapter 14. The only problem is that previously these sections could be frustrating for players who had difficulty with how the game handled lighting. That doesn’t appear to be a problem in Uncharted 4.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the 1080p gameplay premier of Uncharted 4. Although it doesn’t show off any dungeons or dark environments, it is an excellent demonstration of why Uncharted 4 is one of 2015’s most anticipated games.
