Uncharted 4 Wins Game of the Year at BAFTAs, Overwatch Wins Best Multiplayer

Uncharted 4 won the Game of the Year award at this year’s BAFTA Games Awards, with Naughty Dog’s action-adventure beating out Overwatch, Inside, Firewatch, Stardew Valley and Titanfall 2 to pick up the gong.

The game received the biggest award of the evening, though Playdead’s Inside earned the most accolades during the ceremony after taking home the awards for Artistic Achievement, Game Design, Narrative, and Original Property. Overwatch was also well-represented, after being handed the Best Multiplayer award beating out Battlefield 1, Forza Horizon 3, Overcooked, Titanfall 2 and The Division.

The ceremony’s Special Award was given to Brenda Romero, a game designer best known for her work on the RPG series Wizardry. Romero has worked on 47 games throughout her career, including the Def Jam franchise, Ghost Recon and the Dungeons & Dragons series. BAFTA said it was handing Romero the award as a result of her “advocacy for the art and creative process behind game-making, and her commitment to encouraging the next generation of talent in the industry”.

That Dragon, Cancer, a heart-wrenching autobiographical game detailing the final months of an infant’s battle with cancer and the emotional impact this imprints upon the baby’s parents, picked up the award for Game Innovation. Speaking during the ceremony, the game’s writer Amy Green said: “Our life with Joel was hard but it was really beautiful. So, when we thought about creating a game that would become the only legacy he would have – the legacy we chose and he could not – we created a game that was hard to play.

She concluded: “But we believe it was beautiful. And we thank you for believing the same thing.”

Cissy Jones’ voice work as Delilah in Firewatch saw her awarded the Best performer gong, while the Mobile Game award was given to Niantic Labs’ Pokemon Go and fellow mobile title Clash Royale picked up the trophy for best esports game. Indie title Overcooked won the award for British Game, a category that also featured No Man’s Sky, while Firewatch was named Best Debut Game.
