Episode 3.05 “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak

Last week on “Arrow,” Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) had a dream (or a memory) about the night he killed Sara Lance (Caity Lotz).

But is Roy really the killer? Even Team Arrow doesn’t know for sure.

The Confession

Worried that the Mirakuru may have reappeared in his body and caused a violent blackout, Roy begs Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) to test his blood. When the test comes back negative, Roy tells Felicity that he may have killed Sara.

To Roy’s credit, he doesn’t try to hide it from Team Arrow and he confesses to them at the first opportunity, even though Sara’s sister, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) is with them. The team is shocked by the news, but Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) lets Roy leave. Later, John Diggle (David Ramsey) tells Oliver that he has to cut Roy loose to get justice for Sara.

It’s Raining Dead Men

But first, Team Arrow has to deal with the appearance of a new vigilante with a habit of leaving dead men hanging upside down. Oliver’s suspicions quickly fall on Ted Grant (J.R. Ramirez) , Laurel’s new trainer and love interest. But Ted has a good alibi considering that he was at dinner when Laurel when the first body was put in his gym.

Hilariously, Laurel tells Ted that she used to date the Arrow when he sees them constantly bickering with each other. And there’s definitely a few shades of jealousy as Oliver uncovers more incriminating evidence on Ted.

Old School Vigilante

Eventually, Oliver finds the hideout of the other vigilante. But when he confronts Ted, the older man admits that he used to be a vigilante like Oliver before giving it up after a drug dealer was beaten to death. Oliver assumes that this means that Ted killed the man, but he agrees to team up with Ted to find the new killer.

When another body turns up, Ted gets arrested by the Starling City PD. Realizing that Ted knows exactly who is doing this to him, Oliver enlists Laurel to get the truth out of Ted. It turns out that the killer is Isaac Stanzler (Nathan Mitchell), Ted’s former vigilante apprentice. Or as he puts it, Isaac was his Roy before he went too far and killed a man. After that, Ted hung up his mask and broke ties with Isaac.

Hong Kong Memories

In this week’s Hong Kong flashbacks, Maseo Yamashiro (Karl Yune) asks Tatsu Yamashiro (Rila Fukushima) to help Oliver remember something that he saw while chasing down a man on behalf of Amanda Waller. Tatsu reluctantly agrees to share a memory technique with Oliver, but she warns him to stay away from her young son and she also tells him that she wants him out of her life as soon as possible.

This is a CW show. So of course Oliver and Tatsu are going to eventually hook up. In TV, you can always tell. It’s the two people who initially hate each other who always fall for each other.

The Rise of Arsenal

Back in the present, Isaac predictably kidnaps Ted and Laurel, because he has a lot of things that he wants to tell Ted before he kills him. Laurel secretly calls Felicity to summon Oliver for help… seriously? How many times has “Arrow” done the secret phone call to get help bit? I’ve honestly lost count.

Despite being sidelined by Olivier, Roy takes over the chase when the Arrow goes down. Because Isaac and Ted’s partnership is meant to be a reflection of Roy and Oliver’s, the writers can’t resist a few on-the-nose comments from Isaac about Oliver eventually abandoning Roy. Oliver tells Roy that he won’t do that and he finally gives him the superhero name “Arsenal.”

Later, Oliver uses Tatsu’s memory technique to help Roy determine if he killed Sara. It turns out that Roy’s mind played tricks on him and put Sara into his dream because he killed a cop last season while he was overdosed on Mirakuru. In shame and anger, Roy leaves Oliver behind.

She’s Cupid, “Stupid”

Who killed Sara Lance? Meet the newest suspect, as Cupid (Amy Gumenick) makes her first appearance. Cupid introduces herself by name before shooting an arrow at a man.

In theory, Cupid could have killed Sara as a way of furthering her apparent romantic obsession with the Arrow. But it will be anticlimactic if the killer turns out to be Cupid because we’ve never seen her before.

However, I’m betting that this is another red herring. Keep in mind, Sara recognized her killer. So it has to be someone that she (and the audience) already knows.
