Richard Ayoade Will Not Star in US Remake of The IT Crowd Because it’s “Weird”

Richard Ayoade has confirmed that he will not be reprising his role of Moss for the US remake of hit British TV series The IT Crowd, after he appeared in the failed pilot of the show and found the whole experience “very odd”.

Speaking on the Graham Norton Show, Ayoade said: “I was the only one [of the original British cast] dumb enough to do it [appear in the US remake pilot]. It was deeply weird.

“It was a bit like a play where everyone else had left. It was very odd.”

Despite the pilot episode of the US remake failing to gain any traction, NBC has commissioned a second adaptation that the station hopes will prove to be more successful. It has not yet been confirmed who will be filling the roles of the show’s characters, though its creator Graham Linehan has said that he is “closely involved” and that they’ll “get it right this time”.

The IT Crowd is the next show in a long line of UK shows to receive a US makeover, though the results have always been hit and miss. While The Office proved to be a popular spin on Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC classic, the likes of The Inbetweeners and Skins have fallen far below the mark, failing to match the quality of their siblings across the pond. Linehan will certainly be hoping that his second shot at taking The IT Crowd to America will prove to be more successful.
