Pearl Jam’s 10 Best Protest Cover Songs

‘Imagine’ by John Lennon

It’s the crowd singing along. The goosebumps. Goddamn. Pick up the single of this performance on iTunes to benefit Heartbeat.fm, supporting social change between Israel and Palestine.

‘I Won’t Back Down’ by Tom Petty

This stark, beautiful ballad of determination is a timeless melody, one which Vedder & friends do soaring justice to.

Not a protest song: PJ covers Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’

‘Gimme Some Truth’ by John Lennon

In an age of disinformation and misinformation packed with PR campaigns full of hype, distractions and downplays, a call for some raw honesty is a protest in itself.

‘Bleed For Me’ by Dead Kennedys

The lyrics to this one speak for themselves:

In the name of world peace

In the name of world profits

America pumps up our secret police

America wants fuel

To get it, it needs puppets

So what’s ten million dead

If it’s keeping out the Russians?

‘People Have The Power’ By Patti Smith

The message is so simple, and doesn’t require a vessel of passionate fury to remind us: The idea that security and economic growth require remorseless, unchecked power is asinine, and this generation may be the first with the information and communication means available to make that distinction widespread and stop this flawed model from continuing.

People absolutely have the power, especially when we remember that beneath the badges & helmets, behind the suits and uniforms those oppressors and empires consist not of gods or transcendent beings but people. Just people. In this clusterfuck of chaos and agony on a tiny blue dot flying through the infinite nothingness, we’d do well to remember that our strengths and voices are just as relevant as those who would have us believe that they know better, deserve more and should hold authority and judgement over our – or any – society.
