PS Plus Subscription Fees Rising with Little Warning from Sony

The subscription fee required for a PS Plus account is rising in multiple regions including South Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and India.

While North America has been let off the hook, it hasn’t yet been confirmed whether or not these higher membership rates will be employed in Europe or Australia, and considering that South African PS Plus subscribers were given just 24 hours notice before the changes took place, with the fees rising by a huge 51%, it’s certainly going to put off a lot of its current subscribers if Sony employs the same strategy in its more established regions.

According to IGN, PS Plus subscribers in South Africa saw their three-month subscription fee rise from R145 to R219 ($12.88 to $19.46), while the year-long fee skyrocketed from R489 to R749 ($43.45 to $66.55). Sony stated that the changes have been put in place due to “market conditions,” though a 51% jump in price seems like an extraordinarily huge jump in price for that to be the sole case.

Europe and Australia are bigger markets than the listed regions who have been affected by the change, so if an alteration in price is to happen to their PS Plus rates, it is doubtful that Sony would want to potentially alienate its large user base in those areas by implementing such a drastic change in price. However, if they are to introduce a rise in subscription fees in the regions, we’d hope that they would give their users much more notice than they did with their South African users.
