BBC Receives Complaints Following Mark Lawrenson’s Sexist Remark

The BBC has received a number of complaints over a sexist remark made by World Cup commentator Mark Lawrenson.

During Argentina’s match against Switzerland, Lawrenson said that Josip Drmic “should have put a skirt on” after the Swiss striker made a weak effort on goal. His comment led to a Twitter backlash and the BBC receiving 172 complaints, which the company addressed in a statement.

Speaking about Lawrenson’s comment, the BBC said: “We acknowledge that the remark by commentator Mark Lawrenson about Switzerland’s Josip Drmic was inappropriate and we apologise for any offence caused by it.”

It is not known whether Lawrenson will receive any form of punishment for the remark, but given the BBC’s response, it is lookijng unlikely.
