Splendour In The Grass Inflates 2014 Arts Program

Australia’s premier winter musical festival Splendour In The Grass has announced its Arts program for 2014, detailing a diverse array of local and international talent set to display their work in Byron this July.

Featuring alongside the likes of Outkast and Foster The People will be a number of live installations, including the infamous Skywhale hot air balloon which made its public debut as part of Canberra’s centennary celebrations in 2013. The illuminated Skywhale, a $350,000, 23-metre long balloon from artist Patricia Piccinini, will float above punters at the festival.

The surreal ‘Lionel Richie’s Head’ will make its debut Down Under after first appearing at last year’s Bestival in the UK, where 60,000 people stepped inside the giant cranium of the soul singer to hear him sing. Splendour tell us that this year punters will have a “unique opportunity to talk to Lionel Richie’s Head”. Hello?

Also on show will be “monumental living installation” Rumspringer from Bennett Miller and ‘Get Away From Her You Dick’, a response to Western Australia’s shark culling legislation in the form of a 12-metre high white pointer bursting from the ground.

The three-day festival (July 25-27) will also return the Splendour In The Craft tent with workshops from craft specialists Beci Orpin, Kitiya Palaskas, Matt Format, Fancy Free and Ms Candy Sparkles.

And if you’re now kicking yourself at missing your only opportunity to get inside Lionel Richie, boot no more! SITG are releasing 2,500 new tickets this Thursday after the initial allocation sold out soon after they were released, and their annual resale program is expected to be announced soon.
