Lucasfilm Designates Every Star Wars Game as Non-Canon

It goes without saying that there have been many Star Wars games over the years. While some have been disappointing, games like Knights of the Old Republic and the Star Wars: Battlefront games have done the billion dollar franchise justice. But what if all the incredible story that has been developed in these games never really mattered?

Lucasfilm has published a statement declaring only seven Star Wars products canon: the six full feature films and The Clone Wars.

Consequently, all those big events that have happened in Star Wars video games since 1983 has had no impact on the universe. It’s merely for celebrating the IP and engaging in a fictional version of the… fictional universe.

For those who enjoy Star Wars games for their gameplay, this isn’t particularly a big deal. But for the thousands of Star Wars fanatics who have immersed themselves heavily into the lore via games like Knights of the Old Republic, this has come as quite the shock.

Ultimately, this is the result of Star Wars being a film oriented IP first. Video games probably don’t even come second on its list of priorities.

Star Wars: Battlefront 3 is one of the most hotly anticipated games for 2015, and will be the first Star Wars game to be released after this announcement.
