Is ‘Johnball’ The Next Sport Craze?

Those words were once said to me when I was put in charge of a Jr. High and High School youth group years ago and they’ve stuck with me to this day.

So what does that have to do with sports?

Notice the obscene amount of adult kickball leagues pop up recently? Of course dodgeball is as popular as ever. Hell, a good friend of mine started his own L.A. based sports league organization that featured a four-square tournament last weekend.

My point is that our generation is relishing in the games we loved as kids. We’re bringing back every game that involved those giant, rubber balls that left us welts for weeks … as adults, adding an exponential dose of testosterone and thus taking recess to a whole new level.

Such may be the case with ‘Johnball,’ a new game that is taking adult rec leagues by storm — so it seems.

According to the Johnball website, it is “A simple game that only takes a few seconds to grasp.”

They go on to explain, “Use a bat to hit balls at your opponents. Just don’t you dare forget honesty, sportsmanship, and heart.”

So basically it’s dodgeball with baseball bats.

Amazing.

And here is a tutorial in case you want to start your own game, league or extracurricular activity. Just don’t be a floofer and be ready to give up your mother.

I have no idea why it’s called Johnball or where it originated, but based on all the videos and pictures available it appears the game comes from the Minnesota/North Dakota region. I guess this is what happens when you have winter eight months out of the year.
