A Virtual Reality Nature Documentary is in Development for Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift undoubtedly opens up new doors of opportunity for gaming. However, the gaming market isn’t the only one to benefit from its existence.

A new nature documentary titled Conquest of the Skies is currently in production. Produced by Atlantic Productions, it’s being made specifically for the Oculus Rift. The writing and narration will be delivered by none other than David Attenborough, a British broadcaster with a lengthy history in documentaries. It goes without saying that this is a full feature production that could work wonders for VR.

Director John Morris told realscreen:

In terms of the creative challenge, we look at this as being comparable to the beginning of the film industry,

Atlantic Productions has a number of works already on the market which are run on networks including Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, and more.

Although there is software available for Oculus Rift that allows you to watch videos on your PC in a virtual theater, Conquest of the Skies is one of the very first video productions to natively support the device.

As a fan of documentaries, this announcement is exciting for me. I remember watching my first nature documentary in 1080p (Planet Earth on Blu-Ray) and thinking it was an incredible spectacle. Using VR to transport the mind into the on-screen presentation is almost unfathomable. I think I’ll be skipping out on any documentaries featuring huntsman spiders or anglerfish, though.
