DFC Forecasts Xbox One and PS4 to Achieve 100 Million in Sales

The Xbox One and PS4 shot out of the gates last November, quickly landing in the homes of multiple million consumer homes. But how will they fare in the long run? One agency thinks they’ll keep up the momentum.

In a newly published report, DFC Intelligence predicts that both the PS4 and Xbox One will reach 100 million units sold by 2020, at which point a new hardware will take their place.

In contrast, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are right around the 80 million units sold mark after being on the market for over eight years. Both current-gen consoles would have to outpace their predecessors dramatically to achieve the purposed 100 million milestone within seven years’ time.

The market has shifted dramatically during the past few years, with mobile gaming exploding from nothing into leading the market in gross revenue. This has affected the console market direction and indirectly by drawing the attention developers and investors, and also giving consumers more options when looking for entertainment. However, as shown by the early success of Microsoft and Sony’s latest hardware, there’s plenty of demand for hardware focused on bringing entertainment to the living room.

A price drop was noted as a major factor in the sales prediction. The Xbox One in particularly is battling a war of value. A rumor circled the web last month which made it appear that a $399 Xbox One SKU will hit North America during this year. The catch is that either the disc tray or Kinect may be removed to retain a profit margin.
