Gears of War Series Surpasses 22 Million Units Sold

Today’s biggest news is the buyout of the Gears of War IP by Microsoft. It was a bold move by Microsoft, but one that was done with good reason.

The Gears of War series has totaled 22 million units sold, raking in over $1 billion in the process, according to Microsoft.

These sales span all four games (Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment) in addition to the original’s PC release. Although all have performed admirably, Gears of War 2 accounts for the the most at nearly 7 million units sold making it the sixth best-selling game on the Xbox 360.

During the last generation Gears of War was considered one of the Xbox 360’s most fruitful franchises, second only to Halo. Its ramifications for the Xbox One should not be taken lightly.
