2013’s Most Pirated Music

A brigade of pop stars are among 2013’s most downloaded artists according to analytics company MusicMetric.

The list stems from figures taken from peer-to-peer downloading website BitTorrent with the data analysts estimating albums from the below top 20 list were downloaded a combined 64 million times.

The usual suspects topped the results- Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Flo Rida– while French electronic duo Daft Punk cracked the top three after releasing the hugely hyped Random Access Memories in May.

A number of artists made the list despite not releasing new material in 2013, including Maroon 5, Adele and Linkin Park.

However according to Billboard, Music Metric’s list isn’t an entirely accurate look into pirated music.

While Mars’ five million illegal album downloads easily trumped the 641,000 figure of legal downloads through late December, a whopping 11.4 million downloads of individual legal tracks was far greater than any illegal activity.
