Diablo 3 Pushes 14 Million Copies Despite Criticism

Activision Blizzard’s latest financial call revealed that Diablo 3 has accumulated a total of 14 million units sold across all platforms since its debut in May 2012. Its release on PS3 and Xbox 360 this year helped boost its total by several million, proving the investment in console development a successful venture for Blizzard.

Diablo 3 released to uproar from consumers who experienced severe server issues during launch week, and from fans who were unhappy with changes to the series’ formula. That didn’t stop millions from purchasing it after the fact, though.

The game’s first expansion, Reaper of Souls, is wrapping up development and will be out next year. Currently, only PC and PS4 versions are confirmed, which leaves those who invested in this year’s console port. with a conundrum.

Around the time of the expansion’s launch, Blizzard will remove Diablo 3‘s controversial Auction House, one of the game’s main sources of criticism. Blizzard has also made a major effort to improve the game since launch with adjustments to class balance and loot. Reaper of Souls may just end up being the Lord of Destruction of Diablo 3 that fans have been hoping for.
