Rockstar Games Are Already Designing Grand Theft Auto 6

Grand Theft Auto V has released, conquered, and made over a billion dollars for Rockstar Games. But as with any remarkably successful studio, the party time is cut short to start preparing for the next big success. In this case, Grand Theft Auto 6.

Rockstar have been brainstorming for GTA 6, and have tons of ideas according to Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies. He shared what the future holds with Develop Magazine:

We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do. We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas. GTA Online is the focus right now. There ain’t no rest between finishing V and then Online. Plus we have some other things – stuff, DLC, I don’t know how to describe it exactly – that we’d like to do, and we’ll pick the right ones.

GTA titles take years to develop, making GTA Online a critical part of its formula. The reliable revenue stream from its microtransaction market can incentivize devoting a portion of the studio to churn out new content to keep players engaged with the latest title for as long as possible. However, the real money lies in releasing a GTA on next-gen consoles. A port to PS4 and Xbox One would be handy, but a new release has the potential to dominate the next-gen landscape.

As great as GTA V is, it has some shortcomings, most of which stem from its limitations on current-generation hardware. With new consoles on the horizon it won’t be long before it feels dated in a gameplay sense. The best is yet to come.
