Teenage Kiwi Lorde Tops US Charts

A new face has jumped atop the US Billboard Hot 100- 16-year-old New Zealander Lorde.

Threatening the top spot for a number of weeks, her single “Royals” finally ended Miley Cyrus’ two-week run at No.1, becoming the youngest chart leader since Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” in 1987.

Lorde heard about the news before appearing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, her first US network television appearance, tweeting “get the fkouttahere. royals is NUMBER 1 on BILLBOARD in the USAAA.”

The list of New Zealand artists to break into the US charts isn’t extensive- Kimbra made it to No.1 last year with the Gotye hit “Somebody That I Used To Know”, 15 years after OMC (Otara Millionaires Club) stole the spot with “How Bizarre”.

“It feels like a combination of my birthday, Christmas and washing my hair after a month of not doing so,” she told Billboard.

“[I’m] very, very grateful for everyone’s love and kind words.”
